How do you get to the Fern Grotto in Kauai?
You can only reach the Fern Grotto by boat via the Wailua River. Most visitors take a guided commercial riverboat cruise. Independent kayakers are not allowed to land there.
How long is the Fern Grotto boat tour?
The boat tour typically takes 90 minutes round-trip. This includes a two-mile cruise up the river and a short walk to the observation deck.
Can you kayak to the Fern Grotto?

How much are tickets for the Fern Grotto tour?
Adult tickets for the main river cruise are $35. Children aged 2-12 cost $17.50. Non-residents must also pay a $5 park entry fee and a $10 parking fee.
Is the Fern Grotto worth seeing?

Can you walk inside the Fern Grotto?
No. Since rockfalls occurred in 2006, visitors can no longer enter the cave itself. You must view it safely from the designated observation deck.
Are there alligators in the Wailua River?
No. Hawaii does not have any native or wild alligators.
What happened to the Fern Grotto after the hurricanes?
The hanging ferns were heavily damaged by Hurricane Iwa in 1982 and Hurricane Iniki in 1992. The vegetation has steadily rebounded since then.
